Jerry-Mow. Interview.

For the last interview of the 2015-2016 academic year, we asked Jeremy C. and Mohamad A. a few questions. Because it’s fun. Thanks for following these interview series, we aim to continue them come fall. To clarify the descriptors of who is talking, “J+M” is a back-and-forth discussion between two participants. Otherwise, the questions are answered separately.

What is one piece of advice that you gave or thought of giving 2019s? The incoming class?

M – One advice – these two years are going to be the two years you develop a lot of close friendships with your future peers; just definitely don’t take that for granted. Spend a lot of time getting to know people and exploring other aspects of your personality. Because after this, you won’t get much free time again. So definitely use that to your advantage.
J – Yeah, I think the new med students today are studying waaay. Toooo. Hard. Tell them to relax a little more, learn to do more cool stuff, learn new skills – like knitting, or just playing – what’s that game we are playing? Age of empires, with your friends. That’s a new skill I’ve learned in Med school.
Mow: Me too.
J+M:
J – I guess we mostly agree with each other. I don’t really know… M – Yeah, I mean, I think we have the same approach, that’s why we moved in together. J – Same outlook on life. We spend all day together at our shared desk. Study the exact same amount. And hang out the exact same amount. If your marks are too good – you’re studying too much. Marks are a currency that you can spend on other things

M – Can’t let those marks get too high. Make a motivational poster with that quote

What’s your favourite Pastime activity?

J – I have to be careful about what I say here… I think “hockey” became my favourite thing that I didn’t start doing until med school. Mow and I started running together, so now that “hockey” is over, at least we can share something active together
M – It’s hard for me to say one thing, because I’m always changing things that I’m doing… at any one time, I feel like my favourite thing is different – like when I’m playing my favourite video game, I think it’s that. When I’m running, I get really into that. When I built my computer, and was putting it together, and getting the parts, it was pretty sweet. For me, it’s more about picking up different projects and having those things be my favourite at that time.
J+M: M – I feel like living together is sweet, because we motivate each other to do different things. J – we get jealous about the other person doing something. Like Mow got a girlfriend, so I had to get a girlfriend. And a couple other things. Mo got a Costco membership, so I’m probably going to get one now [update: this has happened since the interview]… he also just joined a gym, so I‘m going to have to do that… J – Have I started influencing you? M-I have to – umm – toe the line pretty carefully here… I guess more life skills in general – like I’m trying to clean up after myself more… Trying to be more proactive when it comes to studying, because I’ve been worse in the past… Just general ways to improve my life… J – aww, we enrich each other’s lives…

If you guys played a “dynamic duo” in a screenplay, who would that be?

J+M: M – Dumb and Dumber or Beavis and Butthead? J – Yeah, I think Dumb and Dumber makes sense. Kind of. Always want to be together, probably going to stupid lengths to do stupid things together. Like riding a motorbike through the mountains until our fingers were frozen off… M – I would bring an extra pair of gloves, but would forget to mention. J – that’s okay, because we will be together. M- oh.. I forgot. J – It’s ok, I know you don’t know any better.

Star Wars or Avengers. Pick One.

J+M: J – I don’t know much about Avengers. M – I don’t know much about Star Wars.(sorry Kyle, please don’t hate me) J – I would probably choose Star Wars, because I want to fly a badass spaceship and shoot stuff. M – That’s pretty badass. J – And to make Kyle Canton like me.

What does it take to be “in the loop” with you guys?

J+M: M – I don’t think there’s a lot. Pretty happy getting to know anyone really. So… I don’t think it really takes anything other than a willingness to get to know us back. J – It’s harder now, because I have a strict no-lecture policy, but I try to keep my snapchat story updated. I try to stay in contact with the key players in all the major med houses. M – gotta strategize, you know. J – I try to invite everyone over whenever we have parties, so that’s pretty sweet. M – We try to have a variety of activities, ranging from Partying to having Lan Parties

M – We try to have a variety of activities, ranging from Partying to having Lan Parties

How is it like to be on the same rotation together? Did you guys plan this?

J+M: J – I think a better question would be “how afraid are you of failing clerkship?”. M – That’s a legitimate question. J – I was literally yelling for joy. I think I jumped into his bed and woke him up when I found out. M – I wasn’t even mad, how could I be? Best way to wake up this year! M- But it would be sweet – even if we failed, we would get to do it all over again… hahaha. J – we also scored some of our sweetest friends, so we are pretty pumped. M – We each got our third preference. J – it’s fate. M – someone out there is looking out for us. Thanks Admin.

If it wasn’t Mow/Jerry, who would it be?

J – Owww… that’s a tough one, there are so many sweet boys that I fell in love with in the last 2 years… yeah, Byron, Declan, Stacy… (just dot-dot-dot and leave it there)
M – Aww man, I honestly have no idea. I would probably be wandering the streets of London, all disheveled-looking, looking for a partner. It’s a really tough question. I have fallen in love with a lot of sweet boys as well.
J – I would probably still be living alone
M – I dunno, maybe Amit, Garcia, or Byron. I dunno… there are so many sweet boys that you can’t – you can’t – you can’t… list them all.
J+M: J – I think we both really wish we could have them all living in our house. M – yeah, I mean, Jerry’s pick was also my pick… he’s a real sweet boy. J – I hope our girlfriends don’t read this.

What did you guys think of Tachycardia? Why didn’t you show up Jerry?

J – hahahahahahahahahahaha. Owww, this is a tough one. I thought our show was really cute, so it was really sad when I got kicked out. [Re: Taylor calling Jerry out incident] – we actually planned that. I tried my best to make it to rehearsals, but, in the end, I ended up being a bigger star than I would have been if I didn’t get kicked out. So it’s all good.
M – I haven’t had the chance to see it yet. I look forward to watching the DVD
J – I have also been suffering from Phantom Foreskin Pain for quite a while now [one of the consultant sketches] – so I’m really happy to know that at least I have people out there who are just like me.

I thought our show was really cute, so it was really sad when I got kicked out.

What kind of physicians do you want to be?

M – I’ve always been really into the brain, so I would think I want to do something with that brain. I want to try and keep an open mind going into surgery. I’m thinking more neurosurgery than neuro or psych; maybe neuroradiology. Neurosurg is up there though. The brain – it’s just so fascinating, so it’s got to be that brain. Brain.
J- I’m really a hands-on kinda person. I’m naturally interested in Surgery – like I would enjoy it. So I’m looking into plastics, head-and-neck, but then I often think seriously about something like psych, because it would just be so fascinating to meet, like, just like, like… – if my job would be to talk to people all day, I dunno… maybe it wouldn’t feel like work… and messing with people’s OCD all day like Dr. Watling – it sounds like a lot of fun. That boy is has a real sweet job.
M – what a sweet job – to be messing with people all day
J – Yeah, so we are going to have to find, I’m not sure how we are going to decide on which specialty we are both going to go into, because obviously we’ll have to couples-match. I might have to go into neurosurgery.
M – I’m also open to Jerry’s choices. It’s just a conversation we would need to have sometime.

Tell me something serious. Please.

M – what Einstein said was kinda cool – I dunno, it changes my perspective on the way I think. He was consoling a person whose husband died: look at the universe as a 4-dimensional entity – [her] husband is still there somewhere.
It’s interesting to think that all the choices you’ve made, all the things you’ve done, all the experiences you’ve had still exist somewhere out there.[in 4-dimensional space]. It makes your past and future more tangible, and makes all your choices matter more as they’re etched in time and space.
J – Another Einstein quote: Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value. Which kind of describes how I decide what to do with my life. Because I’m never worried about the future, which sometimes puts people off, especially when you’re dating someone. I look at it this way: if you’re always working hard, and trying to improve yourself, you don’t have to concern yourself too much about exactly how things are going to work out. Everything will come together, you will be fed, you will be able to help people, your life will be good, and the lives of people around you will be good. And there’s nothing to worry about.
J+M: J – just a shoutout to St. Bees & affiliates, Beeftown & associates, Canterbury, Atrophy Boys… the Asians… Leo, Rock, Charles, and Daksh (J – we are bigtime fans of Charles. M – that boy is a bit too sweet for me to handle). Hasandra Brown… Ahmed Mahdi, Tom Hudson, Ranbir, Renaud, Gitau, T-dawg, Fanny Pack, Dirty D, Shawarma, I’m afraid we are forgetting someone… Don’t want to offend them… so many sweet boys out there, can’t even think of them all… M – Obviously Singer, our future roommate. J- who else is there? J – Can’t forget Juan Blanco, RJ Munson and Paxton.
